Tomas was born on the 17th September 1985 in Valasske Mezirici (Czech Republic). His father Martin, was a train engineer and his mother, Hana, is a doctor.

At the age of 5, he started to play tennis, in the tennis center of his hometown Valasske Mezirici. And he became a top junior player very soon . Tomas and his family moved to Prostejov, after winning the Czech-Republic 12-under junior title. In Prostejov, where he still lives, were more practice partners and better coaching. Tomas won several 14- under nationals and 16- under national tournaments and also the prestigious 18- under national title. The 18-under national championships were hosted there in Paravbice, this tournament boasts Ivan Lendl as a former champion. Tomas commuted home often to keep his ties to his old school.

When Tomas is not on the tennis court, he like to follow the matches of the Detroit Red Wings, as he is a huge ice hockey fan. Therefore he takes his laptop computer with him on the tour and also enjoy movies and music.

2002 He turned pro after improved over 800 positions from 1,379 to 532 when he won 2 titles at Czech Futures.

2003 was a good year for Tomas after improving over another 200 spots on the ATP Rankings, he won the Challengers at Budaors (def. Traykov), Graz (def. Knowle) and 2 Challengers in Doubles. Tomas made his ATP debut at the US Open as a qualifier and reached the 2nd Round of his first Grand Slam, he beat in the first round MTomas Behrend (GER) and lost in the 2nd Round to the Argentin Juan Ignacio Chela. In his Davis Cup debut, he won doubles rubber (with Jiri Novak) vs. Thailand in World Group playoffs. Also he played and won his first single match at Davis Cup in the dead rubber versus Udomchoke.

2004 was till there his best year after claimed his first ATP Title in Parlermo after defeating Filippo Volandri (ITA) in the finals while finishing in the TOP 50 for the first time.
Also he won three Challenger titles and his best win (where he is known for) versus Roger Federer while he reached the Quarterfinals at Olympia in Athens (Greece), he lost to Dent.
Therefore he won singles match in Davis Cup World Group playoff tie against Paraguay´s Delgado.

2005 Struggled in first half of the year with a 12-19 match record but in the final four-plus month, he compiled a 22-10 mark highlighted by first career ATP Masters Series Title in Paris Bercy, where he defeated five consecutive seeds/TOP 20 opponents. In the Final he def. #10 Ivan Ljubicic in five sets. After winning his 2nd ATP Title be climbed from #50 to #25 on the ATP Entry Ranking list. In July he was runner-up in Bastad (lost to Rafael Nadal in 3 sets in the final). In Davis Cup he won 2 back-to-back five sets match over Germany´s Nicolas Kiefer and Tommy Haas.

2006 Tomas improved his year-end ATP Ranking for fifth consecutive year, and finished as #1 Czech Republic player for first time.
This year he did not win an ATP tournament but reached the finals in Halle (lost to Roger Federer) and Mumbai (lost to Dmitry Tursunov) and turned his best Grand Slam results, reaching the 4th Round in Roland Garros, Wimbledon and US Open. (lost in RG and Wimbledon to Roger Federer, at the US Open to James Blake)
After his lose to Fernando Gonzalez in the semi final in Madrid, he broke into the TOP 10 for the first time (on Oct. 23)
Tomas helped his country in Davis Cup at the play-offs in September . The czech Republik won vs. the Netherlands.

2007 Tomas finished in Top 15 for second straight year. He captured his 3rd ATP Title at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle (GER), a grass court Event, thereafter he reached his first Quarterfinal at a Grandslam, at Wimbledon.

In total he post a 46-24 record, reached 4 Semifinals (Monte Carlo, Munich, Tokyo & Bangkok), beat Switzerland with his Team in the Davis Cup Playoffs and represent the Czech Republic at the World Team Championships in Dusseldorf (GER) where the Czech Republic only lost in the Final to Argentina.


2008 The season 2008 started with the Hopman Cup. Where he got sick during the first days and couln´t play his best tennis. In Sydney does he reached the Quarter final and at the Australian Open the 4th Round. At the Masters Series Tournament in Miami Tomas reached the semifinal and lost to Rafael Nadal.Unfortunately at the Davis Cup in April he got injured with a torn ligament and had to rest for several weeks. He returned in Hamburg, at the Masters Series Tournament.

In July he was in the Final of the ATP Tournament of Bastad, where he lost to Tommy Robredo.
One month later he presented his country, the Czech Republic at the Olympic Games in Beijing (CHN). He lost in the 3rd Round to Roger Federer.
Another highlight of the season was the semifinal in September in Bangkok (lost to Novak Djokovic) and the 4. career Title in Tokyo one week later. Where he defeated Juan Martin del Potro in the Final.
